Baba's Dilemma: AU Candidacy or Local Politics?

The race for the African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson position is heating up, and it has put Raila Odinga in a tight spot. The former Prime Minister of Kenya had declared his candidature and has been lobbying for support from various African Heads of State. However, his bid for the AU seat has put him at odds with President William Ruto.

President Ruto has managed to corner Raila, who now appears confused in the eyes of both Kenyans and African Heads of State. While some may argue that the AU Commission Chairmanship is not a do-or-die affair for Raila, it is, in fact, a do-or-die affair for him. For him to be cleared, he must be endorsed and fronted by his home state, and this is where the problem lies.

The only way Raila can win the AU Commission Chairperson position is if President Ruto chooses to forward his name as Kenya's candidate. However, this seems highly unlikely given Raila Odinga, has been relentlessly attacking the same government that is deploying all its resources to lobby support for him at the continental stage.

Raila has been playing anti-government politics because he thinks he can have his cake and eat it too. He wants to hold onto local politics while also pursuing his AU bid. But he can't have it both ways. He must choose to lose the AU race or stop local politics altogether.

The AU candidacy is crucial for Raila, and he has already put in a lot of effort into securing support from African Heads of State. He cannot afford to withdraw his candidature at this point, as it would damage his reputation and credibility. However, he must also consider the consequences of his actions towards the Government.

Raila's dilemma is a complex one, and it remains to be seen how he will navigate it. But one thing is for sure, he cannot continue to play both sides. He must make a choice and stick to it if he wants to succeed.
