PS Kimotho Leads the Mission for Completion of Mwache Multipurpose Dam.
The state department of irrigation has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the successful execution of the Mwache Multipurpose Dam Project in Kwale County.
On Monday morning, Irrigation PS CPA Ephantus Kimotho chaired a crucial kick-off mission for the Mwache Multipurpose dam project, a vital initiative aimed at providing water to Kwale and Mombasa counties.
The mission's primary objective is to meticulously assess the project's progress, address challenges, and proactively handle emerging issues to ensure its timely completion.
In May, PS Ephantus Kimotho presided over project update discussions with the project team and various consultants who are instrumental in supporting the implementation of the Mwache Multipurpose Dam project in Kwale.
This meeting served as a critical follow-up to strategize on the way forward regarding the various emerging issues and challenges, all geared towards achieving the project's timely completion by the targeted year of 2026.
PS Kimotho emphasized that the Mwache Multipurpose Dam project represents a vital long-term solution designed to harness the flood flows from the Mwache River Basin.
The project's ultimate goal is to cater to domestic water supply and irrigation needs in Mombasa and Kwale Counties, thereby mitigating the escalating variations in weather and climatic patterns.
The Mwache Multipurpose Dam project, carried out in collaboration with the World Bank - Kenya, involves the construction of an approximately 84-meter high dam.
Once completed, it is projected to supply a staggering 186,000 cubic meters per day of water, a fourfold increase from the current supply. This surge in water supply is in response to the estimated current demand of 200,000 cubic meters per day for domestic and industrial use in Mombasa County and Kwale Counties.
Furthermore, the project is poised to bolster agricultural activities through the development of irrigation infrastructure, thereby enhancing food security and livelihoods. Additionally, it will generate job opportunities for local residents, thus contributing significantly to economic growth and overall development.
