In a historic move that promises to transform the landscape of Isiolo County, State Department of Irrigation PS, Ephantus Kimotho, has spearheaded the implementation of the Isiolo Dam, a project poised to usher in a new era of prosperity and resilience for the region.
Early this year, PS Kimotho engaged the community in a sensitization meeting about the proposed dam, which boasts a significant storage capacity of 214 million cubic meters. This ambitious project is not just about water storage; it's a comprehensive plan to enhance the multipurpose water supply for Isiolo County and its neighboring areas.
The dam is expected to play a pivotal role in irrigating over 100,000 acres designated for Feedlots and a Disease Control Zone, marking a major step forward in agricultural development.
The Isiolo Dam stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against food insecurity, offering a sustainable solution for continuous cropping and bolstering livestock value chains. In the face of climate change, this project is a game-changer, designed to improve climate resilience and, most importantly, the livelihoods of the people of Isiolo County.
On June 4, 2024, a milestone was reached when a team from CRBC, led by Shi Yucheng, presented the preliminary report for the dam to PS Kimotho. The findings were promising, indicating the potential to irrigate an additional 200,000 acres.
On June 5, 2024, Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho made a courtesy visit to Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, as part of a consultative process involving key stakeholders for the Isiolo Dam project. The proposed Isiolo Dam will also support the Isiolo export slaughterhouse, ultimately positioning Isiolo as Kenya's premier meat hub.
PS Kimotho's consultative approach, involving collaboration with key stakeholders and the leadership of Isiolo County, has been instrumental in crafting a critical roadmap. This collective effort has laid the groundwork for the next steps in delivering this vital project, aligning with the Bottom Up Economic Transformation agenda.
The Isiolo Dam is more than just an infrastructure project; it's a vision for a thriving, resilient community, with PS Kimotho at the helm, steering Isiolo County towards a brighter, greener future.
