Kenya is on the brink of a landmark increase in rice production, thanks to the ongoing Mwea Irrigation and Development Project. The project, once completed, is expected to significantly boost rice production in the country.
On Friday, the Principal Secretary for Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho, conducted a thorough site inspection of the Mwea Irrigation and Development Project. The primary objective of the inspection was to assess the impact of recent floods and to gauge the progress of the canal constructions.
Following the inspection, PS Kimotho, alongside officials from the National Irrigation Authority, contractors, and other stakeholders, engaged in comprehensive discussions to address the challenges and emerging issues affecting the project's timely completion.
During the deliberations, PS Kimotho revealed that the completed works have already contributed to an increase in paddy rice production to 131,760 metric tons. This figure is projected to surge by over 50% upon the completion of the canals.
Since it's inception, the Mwea Irrigation Development Project has played a pivotal role in expanding the irrigated area by 10,600 acres, reaching a total of 30,600 acres, and increasing the area under irrigation by 10,000 acres to reach 35,000 acres in a season.
Consequently, these developments are set to elevate rice production from the current 114,000 metric tons to an impressive 200,000 metric tons.
The Mwea Irrigation and Development Project is a result of a successful public-private partnership with support from the Japanese Government.
This collaboration aims to reduce the import bill from the Rice Deficit and is a testament to the positive outcomes that can be achieved through international cooperation.
As the project nears its completion, the future of rice production in Kenya looks incredibly promising, offering hope for increased food security and economic prosperity.
