Kenya's Irrigation landscape at a glance under PS Kimotho.
Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho has been actively overseeing several key projects and initiatives aimed at transforming Kenya's irrigation landscape and boosting food security. Here are some of the notable activities and projects under his leadership from January 2024 to date:
Signing MoU with Elgeyo-Marakwet County
In March 2024, PS Kimotho signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the County Government of Elgeyo-Marakwet to develop water infrastructure in the county. The partnership involves drilling 17 boreholes and rehabilitating dams, which will increase water provision for domestic use and small-scale irrigation, enhancing food security and socio-economic well-being.
Touring Irrigation Projects
PS Kimotho has visited various irrigation projects across the country to assess progress and provide guidance. In January 2024, he toured the Sh750 million Rwabura Irrigation Project in Gatundu South, Kiambu County, which aims to irrigate 1,500 acres and benefit over 3,000 farmers. In May 2024, he visited projects in Embu County.
Collaborating with State Department for Economic Planning
In January 2024, PS Kimotho met with the Economic Planning PS James Muhati to discuss collaborating with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics on data collection and analysis for irrigation projects. This partnership aims to unravel reasons behind the performance of various projects and guide future investments.
Engaging with Parliamentary Committee
In February 2024, PS Kimotho appeared before the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy, Water and Irrigation to discuss the 2024 Budget Policy Statement. He highlighted plans to increase the area under irrigation from 694,000 acres to 863,255 acres, complete the expansion of the Mwea Irrigation Scheme, and implement various community-based irrigation projects.
These activities demonstrate PS Kimotho's commitment to expanding irrigation infrastructure, improving water access, and supporting smallholder farmers through modern irrigation techniques.
His collaborations with county governments, state departments, and parliamentary committees ensure a coordinated approach to transforming Kenya's irrigation landscape and achieving food security.
