Irrigation PS Ephantus Kimotho Champions Warehouse Receipt System to Transform Agricultural Value for Farmers
The State Department of Irrigation, led by PS Ephantus Kimotho, has joined forces with the State Department for Trade, led by PS Alfred Kombudo, to revolutionize Kenya's irrigated agricultural landscape by enhancing the value of irrigation produce.
This partnership also includes the Warehouse Receipt System Council and USAID Kenya, all working towards a common goal of empowering farmers and transforming the sector.
At the heart of this collaboration lies the implementation of a cutting-edge warehousing and receipting system designed to benefit farmers. This innovative system focuses on two critical areas: rice storage and cold storage for horticultural output. By streamlining storage processes, it aims to significantly boost the economic value of irrigation produce.
The key benefits of this system are substantial. First, it promotes financial inclusion and deepening by opening doors for farmers to access financing based on their stored produce. With proper documentation and receipts, farmers can secure loans and invest effectively in their farms.
Second, the system enhances market access and value chain facilitation. Farmers gain access to various markets, both local and international, ensuring better prices and broader opportunities. A value chain approach ensures seamless coordination from farm to market, benefiting both producers and consumers.
Third, the system introduces structured commodity trading, which brings transparency and standardization to the trading process. Clear records and receipts enable fair transactions and build trust among stakeholders.
Simultaneously, the State Department for Trade is spearheading the establishment of a Commodity Exchange Market within the Nairobi Stock Exchange. This ambitious initiative aims to further elevate the value of irrigation produce in both commodities and derivative markets.
The exchange is expected to create a dynamic platform for buyers and sellers, fostering market efficiency through transparent pricing and efficient trading mechanisms that benefit all participants. Farmers will have the opportunity to explore diverse investment options within the value chain, including futures contracts and options.
Additionally, the exchange will provide risk mitigation tools, allowing farmers to hedge against price fluctuations, thereby ensuring stability and encouraging long-term planning. Real-time data on prices, trends, and demand will also be available, enabling farmers to make informed decisions that lead to better outcomes.
According to PS Kimotho, the Ahero Irrigation Scheme warehouse has already undergone assessment for the Warehouse Receipt System, with encouraging progress also being made in Mwea and other potential areas. As these systems take root, farmers will gain access to financing for essential farm inputs, propelling Kenya's agricultural sector forward.
