On Thursday, a pivotal consultative meeting was held to address the pressing land compensation issues surrounding the Mwache Multipurpose Dam project.
The meeting, chaired by Irrigation Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho, brought together key stakeholders, including the Chair and CEO of the National Land Commission (NLC), Mr. Gershom Otachi and Ms. Kabale Tache, respectively, along with local leaders from Kwale County.
The primary focus of the discussion was to advance the Mwache Dam project, a significant government flagship initiative under Vision 2030.
This project, listed among the 100 large dams under the Kenya Kwanza government, aims to alleviate clean water supply shortages in Mombasa City and Kwale County. Once completed, the dam is expected to supply 186,000 cubic meters of clean water per day to these regions.
Addressing Land Compensation Challenges
The meeting underscored the importance of resolving land compensation issues to ensure the smooth progression of the project.
The NLC, mandated with land acquisition, has been instrumental in managing and compensating Project Affected Persons (PAPs).
PS Ephantus Kimotho emphasized the need to fast-track awards for priority area 3, ensuring timely compensation for PAPs. This, he noted, is crucial for the uninterrupted advancement of the project.
Commitment to Transparency and Fairness
National Land Commission Chairman Gershom Otachi reiterated the NLC's unwavering commitment to transparency in all matters related to land acquisition, valuation, and the compensation process for PAPs. This commitment is vital to maintaining trust and ensuring that all affected individuals receive fair compensation.
A Collaborative Effort
The meeting also highlighted the collaborative efforts required from all stakeholders, including local leaders and the NLC, to support the project's success. The involvement of these key players is essential to address and unlock various issues related to land compensation, thereby facilitating the project's timely completion.
A Vision for the Future
PS Ephantus Kimotho expressed confidence that with the concerted efforts of all involved parties, the Mwache Dam project will be completed on schedule.
This project is not only a testament to the government's commitment to improving water supply but also a beacon of hope for the residents of Mombasa and Kwale counties, promising a future with reliable access to clean water.
The Mwache Dam project stands as a critical infrastructure initiative, poised to transform the water supply landscape in the region. With continued support and transparent processes, the dream of a sustainable water supply for Mombasa and Kwale counties is well within reach.
