Mwache Dam Project Takes a Leap Forward with Sh500 Million in Compensation Disbursed

In a significant stride towards the realization of the Mwache Multipurpose Dam project, the government has taken a crucial step by disbursing Sh500 million as the first batch of compensation to project-affected persons.

This milestone marks a turning point in the project's progress, as the State Department of Irrigation, under the leadership of Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho, remains steadfast in its commitment to restoring the livelihoods of those impacted by the dam's construction.

The Mwache Dam project, a vital infrastructure development initiative, has been a subject of keen interest and anticipation among the residents of Kwale County and the surrounding regions.

The dam, once completed, will serve as a crucial water source, providing a reliable supply for domestic, agricultural, and industrial use. It will also play a pivotal role in mitigating the effects of drought and enhancing food security in the area.

Speaking on the compensation process, Principal Secretary Kimotho emphasized that the initial Sh500 million disbursement will address most of the compensation cases, with a few individuals still awaiting payment due to a lack of proper documentation.

He assured that the State Department of Irrigation is working closely with local leaders to resolve these outstanding issues, ensuring that no one is left behind in the compensation process.

The total compensation budget for the project stands at Sh4.4 billion, with Sh1.6 billion already allocated for the priority area. The remaining Sh2.8 billion will be distributed in phases, with Sh538 million scheduled for release in January 2025 to complete the lower check-dam area.

This phased approach ensures that the compensation process is well-structured and that funds are allocated efficiently to meet the needs of the affected communities.

In addition to the compensation efforts, the project also includes community development initiatives supported by the World Bank. These initiatives aim to create sustainable livelihoods and improve the overall well-being of the communities impacted by the dam's construction.

The progress of the Mwache Dam project and the ongoing compensation efforts are being closely monitored by various stakeholders, including the government and local leaders. This collaborative approach ensures transparency and accountability in the implementation of the project, while also safeguarding the rights and interests of the affected communities.

As the compensation process continues, the residents of Kwale County and the surrounding regions eagerly await the completion of the Mwache Dam project. The dam's successful implementation will not only provide a reliable water source but also serve as a catalyst for economic growth and development in the region.
